Globecomm Systems Providing Program Acquisition and Contribution for the National Hockey League's Center Ice® Online Through Contract with IPTV Provider NeuLion
Business Wire, Oct 10, 2007
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. -- Globecomm Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: GCOM), a leading provider of satellite-based communications infrastructure solutions and network services on a global basis, today announced that the Company's wholly owned subsidiary, Globecomm Network Services Corporation (GNSC) and NeuLion Inc. began providing program acquisition and contribution feeds of National Hockey League (NHL) games for live streaming from the NHL TV Web site on September 1, 2007.
The contract with NeuLion calls for GNSC to use proprietary NeuLion software/hardware to stream up to 30 simultaneous live games to subscribers of the NHL's Center Ice([R]) Online Internet TV service. GNSC will aggregate the satellite and fiber video feeds at its Long Island International Teleport (the teleport), transcode them to IP format using NeuLion's online video platform collocated at the teleport and transmit the games via fiber to NeuLion content delivery centers.
In addition to the downlinking, transcoding and fiber transmission, GNSC provides 24x7 network monitoring, help desk support and system maintenance from its Network Operations Center at the teleport.
"NeuLion is one of the most experienced providers of end-to-end IPTV service over the Internet," said Ron Nunn, NeuLion's executive vice president. "Our skill set is in reaching targeted markets across multiple devices from the TV to the Web to mobile devices. We're glad to have a company with GNSC's media experience providing the expertise in satellite and fiber program acquisition."
"We appreciate the trust that NeuLion is placing in us," said Keith Hall, V.P. and General Manager of GNSC, "We handle a lot of feeds in MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 for satellite and cable delivery to television sets, in both live and playout mode. Our recent Showtime Networks Inc. broadcast center contract is just one example. While this contract is not financially material at this time, it represents GNSC's entree into delivering MPEG-4 TV content live to the desktops of PC users."
