$250,000 Grant From AT&T Aids Kennedy Presidential Library Effort to Digitize Archives to Enable Public Access via the Internet

Business Wire, Oct 17, 2007

BOSTON -- Today, on what marks the 45th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, AT&T announced a $250,000 grant to the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation in support of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum's groundbreaking initiative to digitize, index and archive millions of presidential documents, manuscripts, photographs and audio/visual recordings of President John F. Kennedy, eventually making them accessible to citizens throughout the world via the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum's website, www.jfklibrary.org.

The grant from AT&T will enable the Kennedy Library Foundation to retain a Project Manager and three highly skilled archivists to support the National Archive's efforts to organize and catalogue the collection in a manner that will enable historians, academics and the general public to easily search and find specific information within the 48 million documents, images and recordings. The project to digitize the collection is expected to take more than 10 years and will begin with the official papers of President Kennedy. The initiative to digitize a presidential library collection is the first of its kind in the nation.

Among the documents being digitally preserved are many used by President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, including a map recently recovered from a private collection on behalf of the Kennedy Presidential Library by the National Archives and Records Administration. The map (see accompanying photos) was used by President Kennedy to visualize the location of Soviet Missile batteries located throughout Cuba.
