Business Wire, Sept 17, 2007
Online Program is Designed to Provide Strong Foundation in Anti-Terrorism and Security Issues
MCLEAN, Va. -- In response to a rapidly growing need for expertise in homeland security and threat management, Alion Science and Technology today announced it is collaborating with Hampton University, of Hampton, VA, to deliver an online certificate program in homeland security. The first course, Homeland Security Fundamentals, will begin October 22nd 2007.
According to Don L. Rondeau, Alion's Vice President of Homeland Security, the six-week program provides students with the unique opportunity to study with subject matter experts who will share their decades-long, real world experience in national security and critical infrastructure protection. The curriculum is comprised of three courses: Homeland Security Fundamentals; Anti and Counter Terrorism Strategies; and Threat Assessment and Risk Management Studies.
"Alion has many years of experience in developing and delivering distance learning solutions," Rondeau said. "That, combined with our expertise in homeland security and emergency management issues, gives us the ability to integrate a powerful, effective solution with Hampton University and our other partners."
Rondeau said that the courses were developed in partnership with TotalSecurity.US, which develops and maintains course content and provides instructors for courses and WebTrain Communications, Inc., which provides the online environment for interactive education.
Teresa Walker, Assistant Provost for Technology at Hampton University, said the program is aimed at helping professionals achieve their career goals by providing specialized education in a high-demand area. "The educational thrust is focused on real world events and solutions. This can give students a greater understanding of the issues, and will provide a foundation for career growth," she said.
Walker said that the curriculum is designed to:
* Provide a detailed foundation in domestic and international terrorism issues and threats
* Examine the capabilities and limitations (strengths and weaknesses) of America's terrorist enemies
* Introduce students to domestic and international terrorism issues and threats with an update on the current threat activity
Rondeau said that the Homeland Security Certificate program is designed to help first responders, emergency officials, city managers and other professionals gain skills and insight so as to contribute to security efforts at a local, state or national level. Walker added that Hampton University is dedicated to making sure that the minority community has a voice in homeland security and emergency preparedness planning and direction.
Rondeau said that Hampton University, working with Alion, has been committed to showing leadership in homeland security and emergency response for several years. He cited the University's Emergency Responders Virtual Environment (ERVE) system, which is a customized version of Alion's Response Information Folder System (RIFS) application. This Web-based solution provides responders with a complete view of the campus's infrastructure, including blueprints, panoramic photos, access routes and more. It also provides emergency alerting through Web, e-mail, text messaging, phone and instant messaging.
