Hitz and Lau to Accept Prestigious Award and Speak at 2007 IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- On Tuesday, September 25, 2007, Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) cofounders Dave Hitz and James Lau will be awarded the prestigious 2007 Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the world's largest technical professional society.
At the IEEE's 24th Annual Symposium on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies in San Diego, California, Hitz and Lau will be recognized for their innovative contributions to the data storage industry. During their careers, Hitz and Lau have helped to alter the landscape of the storage industry through the creation of WAFL[R] (Write Anywhere File Layout) technology. Invented in the early 1990s and patented in 2001, WAFL is a software kernel that stores and retrieves information anywhere, at any time. It was created on the premise that data is a living, breathing organism that should be continuously moving so that assets can be managed, shared, and protected throughout an organization. Embedded in the Data ONTAP[R] storage operating system, WAFL is the hallmark technology behind NetApp[R] storage systems.
