Targus Expands Its EcoSmart™ Initiative
Business Wire, Sept 19, 2007
The Company Drives into the Future by Sponsoring the University of Michigan's Solar Car Team
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Targus([R]) Inc., maker of the world's top-selling laptop computer cases and accessories, today announced it is a sponsor of Continuum, the University of Michigan's ninth-generation Solar Car Team. The award-winning team consists of talented students who build and race the ultimate solar-powered vehicle in competitions around the world.
By sponsoring Continuum, Targus supports the advancement of eco-friendly programs as part of its new EcoSmart[TM] initiative, the company's environmental business approach designed to help preserve the environment. The company has implemented 'green' practices such as using recyclable office supplies, executing a companywide recycling program, developing more eco-friendly product packaging and developing more energy efficient manufacturing methods. Targus launched EcoSmart with its new EcoSmart laptop bags, which are PVC-free and made from recyclable plastics and nickel-free metals.
"Targus is determined to support eco-friendly practices by promoting development activities such as the Continuum project," said Al Giazzon, vice president of marketing at Targus. "As part of our EcoSmart initiative, Targus is delighted to support the University of Michigan's Continuum Solar Car Team and aid in the conservation and preservation of our environment."
As the only collegiate team to enter into national and international races, Continuum competes against other corporate and private teams in such competitions as the North American Solar Challenge in the US and Canada and the Panasonic World Solar Challenge in Australia. The team uses small, triple-layered solar cells composed of silicon or gallium-arsenide to convert solar energy to electricity, covering the top of the solar car for optimum energy generation. The University aims for broader use of such pollutant-reducing, alternative energy-sources in the future production of automobiles.
"The Continuum team is committed to research and racing of solar cars to promote energy efficiency within our environment," stated Brian Ignaut, Solar Car Team's Project/Race Manager. "We are honored to have Targus as a dedicated sponsor for our team and excited to work toward the common goal of creating a more environmentally responsible society."
