ZyLAB Enhances Information Access Platform with integration to Google Internet Search Engine

Allows Google Crawlers to Access Public Archives Data Stored in Secure ZyIMAGE XML Repositories; New Capability Implemented Based on Customer Demand

VIENNA, Va. -- ZyLAB, an innovative developer of Information Access Solutions, today announced that it has finalized a technology partnership with Google that enables users on the internet to find and access public archives information located within secure ZyIMAGE XML repositories via the Google internet search engine (www.Google.com). With the high use of internet search engines, the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and other ZyLAB customers requested this added functionality to increase traffic and offer transparent access by internet search engines to the stored information in ZyLAB repositories.

Last year, NAL launched the NAL Digital Repository (NALDR) using ZyLAB's ZyIMAGE system to provide access to the full text of selected United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) publications. The site is available at: http://naldr.nal.usda.gov/. Searching for information with an internet search engine crawler such as Google offers added access to public archives stored in ZyIMAGE.

"The NALDR contains a wide variety of publications that have been digitized by NAL dating back to 1864," said Carol Ditzler, Head of the Collection Services Branch. "This is all public information and we want to ensure that it is easily found by the public but stored in a secure manner. With the enormous popularity of Internet search engines such as Google, it only made sense to incorporate this type of functionality. We applaud ZyLAB for making this a reality."

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3c) developed a special mechanism to overcome the challenge of information stored in repositories (such as the secure XML ZyLAB repository) by developing what is called a "Sitemap". When a Sitemap file is stored in the WWW root of the server with access URL's, the internet crawlers can index the data in the ZyIMAGE repositories by launching a URL for each document. The text of a document is then returned to the crawler. The text is added to the internet search engine index. When a user then uses Google, Google can point to the URL that shows the document, even if it is an image-based scanned document.
