Alion's Honorable Mention Paper Outlines Exercise that Simulates Urban Response to Major Crisis

MCLEAN, Va. -- A paper authored by two Alion Science and Technology employees was chosen to be presented at this year's Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Fla. from Nov. 26-29. The paper was also selected as a Continuing Education Unit (CEU), a distinction given to papers that qualify students for continuing education credits, and has been awarded show-level honorable mention.

The paper, entitled "UR2015: Technical Integration Lessons Learned," was written by Richard Williams and Shane J. Smith of Alion's BMH division. Williams is the deputy technical director for federation and Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) development at the Joint Forces Command J9 (Joint Innovation and Experimentation Directorate). Smith is a simulation and C4I (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence) systems integrator for the core JSAF modeling and simulation team at JFCOM J9.

The paper looks at the Urban Resolve 2015 Experiment, conducted in 2006, and examines the successes and challenges encountered during the experiment. It also makes recommendations for streamlining integration among diverse simulations distributed over multiple sites. The experiment, which tested roughly 30 simulations that replicate an urban environment after a major crisis has occurred, involved more than 1,000 participants at 19 different sites across the United States.

I/ITSEC is an annual conference that is considered to be one of the most important gatherings in the modeling and simulation arena. The conference promotes cooperation among the armed services, industry, academia and various government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs, identification of common training issues and development of multiservice programs, according to the I/ITSEC Web site.

Each year at I/ITSEC, 500 papers are submitted detailing interesting work contractors are performing along six key areas - simulation, training, education, human performance, research and development, and policy, standards, management and acquisition. Out of the 500 papers, 100 are selected for presentation. A much smaller number of the papers are chosen as CEUs.

Only 14 papers are given the honorable mention distinction. One winner is chosen during the conference.
