Vignette CTO Addresses the Future of Video on Demand at IPTV World Forum
Business Wire, Sept 25, 2007
AUSTIN, Texas -- In a digital age characterized by anywhere, anytime access, Video on Demand (VOD) services are allowing consumers to enjoy their favorite programming at their own convenience. Whether looking for classic college football games or favorite cartoons for your children, VOD gives consumers the ability to view content whenever they choose. However, searching for and accessing desired content often requires consumers to navigate a labyrinth of programming guides and menus, a problem that will likely intensify as the amount of digital content available to consumers increases.
Dr. Conleth O'Connell, chief technology officer at Vignette (NASDAQ:VIGN), will explore this topic further during the "What's Next with VOD" panel discussion at the IPTV World Forum in San Francisco. The panel begins at 12:00 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, September 25 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
"Video on Demand is about delivering interactive content that isn't available on a set schedule, but there's an inherent flaw in this type of model and it lies within the search function," said O'Connell. "As the library of content for VOD offerings grows exponentially, broadcasters will need to rely heavily on content management solutions to ensure programming is available in an intuitive, easily discoverable format."

Once touted as a killer app for cable operators, VOD service hasn't been a wild hit. It's a steady performer, but with online movie rental services starting to emerge, what is the future of VOD? Will television and niche content be enough or do consumers require the latest and greatest movies? Every service provider needs a VOD strategy. The question is what is the right one these days?
