Securian Represents MN on AARP's List of "Best Employers for Workers Over 50"
Business Wire, Sept 25, 2007
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Securian Financial Group, Inc. is the only Minnesota company on the AARP's list of "Best Employers for Workers Over 50" and one of only five financial services companies nationwide. This is Securian's third appearance on the list.
"Almost one-fourth of our corporate employees are over 50 and their average tenure with Securian is more than 17 years," said Kathleen Pinkett, second vice president, Human Resources Planning. "We try hard to keep our good people. That is why we have flexible employment practices that make it easier for employees of any age to stay at Securian."
Many 50-something professionals find themselves "sandwiched" between generations by simultaneously having to care for their children and their frail elderly parents. Flexible employment practices such as schedule adjustments, reduced working hours, and leave are aimed at helping Securian employees achieve work-life balance while retaining their professional status and benefits. Pinkett says it's good business for the company to be flexible when valued employees need time to care for family members.
"We invest in our people by providing competitive pay and quality benefits," said Pinkett. "We protect that investment by creating a caring culture of support so that associates do not feel their careers are threatened when they need to focus on family."
Many Securian employees who want to phase into retirement may work part-time if the reduced schedule makes business sense.
Because the company provides a defined benefit pension plan, federal law prohibits employees who have retired from Securian from working more than 1,000 hours a year for Securian. In all, Securian employs 24 people who are 65 or older, three of whom are Securian retirees.
Securian Financial Group also appeared on the AARP's 2004 and 2005 "Best Employers" lists. The company has appeared 12 times on Computerworld's list of "Best Places to Work in IT" and six times on the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal's list of "Great Places to Work in the Twin Cities." Additionally, the Twin Cities ranks at the top of a recent Dow Jones Marketwatch study of the nation's best metro centers for business, winning by a wide margin.
