Targacept to Present at Three Upcoming Investor Conferences

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Targacept, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRGT), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a new class of drugs known as NNR Therapeutics (TM), today announced that:

* J. Donald deBethizy, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, is scheduled to present at the "ThinkClinic" educational forum for healthcare investors sponsored by ThinkEquity Partners LLC at The Pierre in New York City at 2:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on October 4, 2007;

* Alan A. Musso, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, is scheduled to present at the Natixis Bleichroeder Hidden Gems Conference at The Carlton in New York City at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on October 8, 2007; and

* Dr. deBethizy is also scheduled to present at the BIO Investor Forum at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco at 10:45 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on October 10, 2007.
