America's Top Colleges, Universities and Research Institutes Enroll in DriveSavers New Education Partner Program

University of Pennsylvania Benefits From Program as DriveSavers Rescues Six Years of Irreplaceable Research Data
NOVATO, Calif. -- DriveSavers, the worldwide leader in data recovery services, announced today that the company launched its first Education Partner Program with over 100 of the United States' top colleges, universities and research institutions currently enrolled. The program is designed to provide educational institutions, professors, teachers and students a cost-effective, reliable and secure solution to recovering data from all storage devices. Recently, scientists from the University of Pennsylvania benefited from DriveSavers services when they nearly lost the data from an experiment that took six years to construct.
The scientists were seeking answers to some of the most important questions regarding the formation and evolution of stars, galaxies and star clusters. The six-year project called BLAST (Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope) took place at a remote station in Antarctica where an unmanned balloon carrying a powerful space telescope floated into the stratosphere to gather data. The data from the space telescope's readings was stored on a standard 200GB hard drive. At the end of the balloon's 11-day flight, the balloon lost altitude and dragged the telescope 120 miles over icy tundra and ultimately crashed. After an amazing rescue of the hard drive, the scientists were devastated to learn that the hard drive would not boot up. The badly damaged drive was delivered to DriveSavers, where engineers in a Class 100 cleanroom, a dust-free environment 10,000 times cleaner than normal office air, were able to rebuild the entire data set to perfection.
"Six years of work would have gone down the tubes and our research would have stopped if we hadn't gotten the data back using DriveSavers Data Recovery Services," said University of Pennsylvania scientist Mark Devlin. "Now, we can analyze the data, continue our research and share our discoveries with the rest of the world."
Many other educational institutions are currently benefiting from DriveSavers Education Partner Program including: Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, John Hopkins University, Purdue University, Rutgers University, Stanford University, Texas A&M University and University of Connecticut.
