Starent Networks to Provide Network Mobility Solution for Sprint XOHM™ WiMAX Service
Business Wire, April 1, 2008
LAS VEGAS -- Starent Networks, Corp. (Nasdaq: STAR), a leading provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver multimedia services, today announced Sprint will deploy the Starent ST40 multimedia core platform to provide subscriber management and mobility for its XOHM[TM] WiMAX network.
With the XOHM network launch, Sprint will be providing secure, mobile broadband access to the Internet utilizing WiMAX, a fourth-generation (4G) wireless technology. Sprint's aim is to expand Internet access through a new class of devices beyond laptops and cell phones, such as portable media players, video cameras, MP3s and more.
Starent Networks' solutions will play a key role in the network by anchoring the subscriber's connection, enabling roaming throughout the network. Sprint has already announced that ecosystem partners will create multimode devices that will support services on both 4G networks and 3G networks in areas outside of planned 4G coverage. Starent Networks' solutions will provide universal roaming capabilities designed to enable handoffs between a 3G and mobile WiMAX network.
"The Internet is a key part of our daily communications and information exchange," said Atish Gude, SVP Operations for XOHM. "We are working to make the Internet experience available on the go. As a result, we are deploying a 4G network and creating a WiMAX ecosystem to help us successfully do that. We are pleased that Starent Networks is working with us to make the mobile Internet a reality."
"Sprint has long demonstrated a commitment to deploying innovative technologies that increase our ability to communicate," said Ashraf Dahod, CEO of Starent Networks. "One of our roles in the deployment of the XOHM service is to enhance a prominent feature of the network - mobility. We appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the deployment of such an innovative new communications medium that Sprint has taken a leadership role in providing."
