Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo, Actor Sean Hayes and Local Community Members Join in Celebration of Largest Donation in Clinic's History

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Free Clinic held a special unveiling ceremony on April 21, 2008 at its Beverly Health Center in Los Angeles, CA in honor of its name change to The Saban Free Clinic. The ceremony celebrated its largest donation in history, a $10 million endowment from philanthropists Cheryl Saban, PhD, and Haim Saban, which will provide much needed discretionary funds for funding gaps and delivery of program services at the Clinic. Clinic members were joined by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Actor Sean Hayes, local officials, community members and Clinic Board members and donors, among others.

The celebratory event, emceed by "El Piolin," star of Hispanic-America's top-rated morning show "El Piolin por la Manana," featured remarks from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Cheryl Saban, PhD, and Saban Free Clinic Board President Karl Pettijohn, as well as an unveiling of the Clinic's new signage.

"The overwhelming support shown today for the Free Clinic is evidence of how deeply this community cares for its neighbors. This celebration isn't just about the name change of our building. It's about building a future for the underprivileged of Los Angeles for years to come. The areas we serve have among the highest concentrations of medically uninsured people in the nation. An estimated 40% of the adults and 14% of the children have no insurance coverage. So we are truly grateful for Cheryl and Haim's generosity and their efforts to help sustain these core community health services," continued Karl Pettijohn, Board President of the Clinic.

In her opening remarks, Cheryl Saban, PhD, commented, "My personal experience with the Los Angeles Free Clinic years ago gave me a unique perspective on what quality healthcare can provide for a community. Our nation's healthcare system has proven itself to be faulty over the years and it saddens me to know that of the 2.7 million uninsured people in Los Angeles County, approximately 200,000 are children. A staggering 60% of children in Los Angeles have no dental insurance whatsoever. Healthcare is a basic fundamental need that should be provided for every human being."

"As always, our greatest wish is that this gift will create further awareness among the community and will drive additional contributions to support the long-term success of the Clinic in providing health services to the uninsured in Los Angeles," said Haim Saban.

Founded in 1967, The Los Angeles Free Clinic is a highly regarded health and social services organization with four clinics, 195 employees, more than 400 volunteers, and over 90,000,000 patient visits annually. The Los Angeles Free Clinic operates in partnership with institutions such as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Kaiser Permanente, Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental Medicine and UCLA School of Dentistry.
