NetApp Honored With InfoWorld Green 15 Award

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- NetApp (NASDAQ:NTAP), the innovation leader for storage and data management solutions, announced today that IDG's InfoWorld, the leading integrated media brand for IT decision makers, has named NetApp a winner in InfoWorld's inaugural Green 15 awards. NetApp was honored for its innovative storage efficiency, data center design, and techniques to reduce power consumption in its data center. This honor is part of InfoWorld's first-ever Green 15 special feature published on www.infoworld.com.

NetApp formed a cross-organizational, multifunction team to approach the task of reducing power consumption and increasing energy efficiency in its data center. This team deployed efficient storage and innovative design techniques to optimize overall power efficiency through the modification of NetApp's data center power delivery and cooling systems. The data center now meets or exceeds the EPA's 2011 energy usage state-of-the-art data center maximum achievable scenario.

To increase energy efficiency, NetApp implemented several cooling techniques, including hot aisle/cold aisle equipment arrangement, vinyl strip curtains to prevent hot air from mixing with cold air, and Air Handling Units equipped with outside air economizers to cool the data center. These techniques increased the overall temperature of the NetApp data center and improved energy efficiency 19.2% during the winter months and 11% during the summer months.

NetApp also dramatically increased storage utilization and reduced power consumption through innovative data management and design. NetApp consolidated its storage systems and replaced 50 systems with 10 NetApp[R] storage systems, increasing capacity utilization to more than 60%. In addition, NetApp reduced its data center footprint from 24.83 to 5.28 racks and decreased chilled water demand by 94 tons, which helped reduce electricity by 494,208 kWh and led to an annual savings of $59,305.
