Solazyme Announces Appointment of Dr. James Barber as Key Advisor and Consultant

Dr. Barber Brings Extensive Biotechnology Experience to New Position
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Solazyme, Inc., a leading synthetic biology company that harnesses the power of microalgae to renewably produce clean and scalable high performance biofuels, "green" chemicals and health and wellness products, today announced that Dr. James J. Barber has joined its board of advisors. In this role, Dr. Barber will draw on his deep expertise in driving companies from R&D into the commercial arena to help accelerate Solazyme's progress.
Dr. Barber has extensive experience in industrial biotechnology, having most recently served as President and CEO of Metabolix Inc., which he joined in 2000. Under his leadership, Metabolix developed the Mirel[TM] line of bioplastics and formed Telles[TM], a 50-50 joint venture with Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), to commercialize the production of Mirel[TM]. Dr. Barber also led Metabolix through a successful IPO in November 2006.

Prior to Metabolix, Dr, Barber served as Global Business Director for the Organometallics and Catalysts business of Albemarle Corporation, with global P&L responsibility for that $100+ million business. He also served as Director of Business Development with Ethyl Corporation, with responsibility for acquisitions and managing Ethyl's venture capital activities, as President of Geltech, Inc., a venture capital backed Company focused in the area of precision molded micro optics, and as Chief Operating Officer of Hyperion Catalysis International, a development stage Company producing carbon nano-fibers.
Dr. Barber received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1976, and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980. He received the American Chemical Society's Henry F. Whalen, Jr. award for Business Development in September of 2003.
