NEW YORK -- What is sexy? It can be drop-dead gorgeous or quirky and offbeat. Funny or intense; charming or intelligent. It can revolve around a physical trait, like a person's eyes or smile, but it can also be a state of mind. This week, in its second annual "Sexiest Stars" issue (May 5 issue; on newsstands May 1), TV Guide spotlights 24 television personalities who embody, in one form or another, this most elusive of qualities. Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsey and Ghost Whisperer's Jennifer Love Hewitt each grace a collectible cover, while the inside pages feature rich, original color photography. So what makes these 24 people stand out as sexy? TV Guide went straight to their co-stars, who offer their own--often surprising--opinions about what makes these stars sizzle.

Sure he has a "beautiful head of hair and dazzling smile," but it is his offbeat and spontaneous temperament that makes Dempsey over-the-top sexy for his Made of Honor costar Michelle Monaghan. "He's a real goofball. There's a scene in Made of Honor where he takes me to do my bridal registry, and he's trying to convince me to get a particular kind of china...all of a sudden Patrick picks up some plates and starts juggling them," she says. "He proceeded to juggle china all day long--and he only dropped one or two pieces," she says.

"For an all-American girl, Jen definitely has aspects that you wouldn't normally expect," says Hewitt's Ghost Whisperer co-star David Conrad. "She's a little more exotic. There's more mystery to her. She's actually sexier in person than she is on camera...and in the three years that we've been filming there's always a moment when I just go, 'Wow. That's a really beautiful woman.'"
