European Prostate Cancer Therapeutics Market Supported by Enhanced Awareness
Business Wire, April 7, 2008
LONDON -- Prostate cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Western Europe, with as many as half a million patients in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France alone. An ageing male population and heightened awareness about the disease is boosting the market for prostate cancer therapeutics.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.pharmaceuticals.frost.com), European Prostate Cancer Therapeutics Markets, finds that market earned revenues of over USD 1,410 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach USD 1,940 million in 2013.

"A high unmet clinical need and the ageing male population will be the prime drivers in the European prostate cancer therapeutics market," notes Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Sumanth Kambhammettu. "Enhanced awareness levels will further support the uptake of prostate cancer therapeutics."
Age remains the single most influential risk factor for prostate cancer. Considering the fact that approximately 16 per cent of Europe's population is aged over 65, incidence of the disease will continue to increase. In addition, current alternatives are far from being fully effective. This situation is highlighting the need for more sophisticated treatment options.
For many years, there has been little consensus on issues relating to screening, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. However, with programmes such as the European Randomised Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer trial (ERSPC) underway, diagnosis rates are expected to receive a boost in the coming years. At the same time, organisations such as EUROPA EUMO are working towards educating patients about the disease and various treatment alternatives.
However, a lack of complete understanding of the etiology of the disease is likely to hinder the development of effective treatments. Moreover, limited knowledge of the side effects associated with current treatment modalities, and the dearth of efficient screening tools also threaten to restrict market opportunities.
"Current treatment modalities have various side-effects that continue to pose serious problems to patients," explains Kambhammettu. "In addition, prostate cancer remains one of the most poorly screened cancers in Europe with no single, effective tool to diagnose the disease."
Industry participants should enter into strategic alliances with smaller research-focused companies with promising drugs in the pipeline. Several companies are making efforts towards improving diagnosis and screening.
