China is the world's largest supplier of camping lanterns, flashlights and other portable electric lamps, accounting for about 50 percent of global trade. In 2007, the export industry broke the US$1 billion mark, with sales having grown more than 30 percent year-on-year.
The upswing is expected to continue through 2008, as companies implement price adjustments and roll out newer, high-margin models. Exports during the first quarter are already 21 percent higher at US$253 million, despite a 4 percent decline in shipment volume, compared with exports in the same period last year.
Companies are shifting to high-value-added production primarily to prop margins, which are being whittled away by rising production costs. In the past year, makers have seen quotes for key raw materials and components increase by up to 40 percent, while wages and other labor-related expenses have gone up by 5 to 10 percent.
The continued appreciation of the yuan is putting additional pressure on suppliers to move up the value chain. Since its revaluation in 2005, the currency has strengthened more than 10 percent against the US dollar, which has cut the profits of many companies by about 15 percent.
For the long-term, suppliers are hoping that expanding into high-value-added production will gain them a sustainable advantage over competitors. Even as they continue to enhance operating efficiency, these companies are increasing their investment in R&D and obtaining patents to protect their designs.
The following are other key trends we see in China's camping lantern and flashlight industry:
* Suppliers will continue to embrace the environmental trend in product development, following the growing ecological awareness in many countries. Releases will include more designs with NiMH or lithium-based batteries that can be powered by sunlight and other renewable sources of energy.
* LED models, specifically those with high-power diodes, will continue to increase as the technology matures and the components become less expensive.
* North America and the EU will be the primary target of new releases, although several suppliers will also increase penetration of Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa. The two regions currently absorb more than 40 percent of China's camping lantern and flashlight exports.
* The industry's total production capacity will increase in coming months, with several makers establishing new factories or expanding current facilities in preparation for greater demand.
