Business Wire, August 28, 2008
WHERE to provide a location-based experience for users of the revolutionary 4G WiMAX network service
BOSTON -- Today, uLocate Communications announced its award winning location-based application platform, WHERE, has been chosen by Sprint to power the portal that will deliver local information and mapping services to XOHM subscribers. In this role, WHERE will act as a development platform for content owners that wish to harness the location information inherent in 4G WiMAX technology for their applications. As part of the announcement uLocate's Buddy Beacon[R], North America's leading friend finding application will also be available to XOHM users.
WHERE will provide XOHM with a fully converged mobile internet experience and feature unique location based content from leading brands including:
* Yelp - a useful service which provides user generated reviews on restaurants and businesses nearby.
* Topix - the nation's leading news aggregator service which delivers headlines relevant to a user's current location.
* Eventful - a fun and easy way to find out what events are happening in your neighborhood.
"With faster download speeds, full mobility and broad geographic coverage, our research demonstrates that US consumers want to adopt 4G networks as their mobile internet access technology of choice, as services become commercially available starting in Q4 2008 " said Berge Ayvazian, Chief Strategy Officer, Yankee Group. "Now, thanks to the deal between Sprint and ULocate, XOHM users will have a truly local experience while browsing content in the WHERE portal and content owners will have access to a development platform to integrate location information into 4G WiMAX applications and services."
"By combining the WHERE platform and its extensive partner network with XOHM's inherent location capabilities, we are able to offer leading 'geobrowsing' services across a broader range of devices," said Rick Robinson, XOHM VP of Products and Services.
"WHERE has been widely recognized as the leading platform for developing and distributing location-enabled applications," said Walt Doyle, CEO of uLocate Communications. "We are thrilled to be chosen by Sprint's XOHM team as the provider of the portal, delivering local information and mapping services. We are also pleased to be able to offer developers a new way to easily develop and distribute innovative applications for the nation's first 4G WiMAX experience."
