About the Author
Before passing in 2000, Dr. James Lathrop Meriam was an internationally known author and professor of engineering and was regarded as a pioneer in engineering education during the last century. He spent 21 years as a faculty member of University of California-Berkley, during which time he served as the dean of graduate studies and the the chairman of the Division of Mechanics and Design. Over the span of his career, Dr. Meriam received numerous awards including the Outstanding Faculty Award of Tau Beta Pi and the Distinguished Educator Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. He was a member of the ASEE and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
