Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Teridian's Pioneering Technologies and Growing Stature in the Global Set-Top Box Semiconductors Market
Business Wire, Feb 19, 2008
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Based on its recent analysis of the set-top box (STB) semiconductor market, Frost & Sullivan presents Teridian Semiconductor Corporation with the 2007 Global Set-Top Box Semiconductors Emerging Company of the Year Award.
This Award recognizes Teridian's focus on technological innovation based on customer requirements and its growing presence in the STB IC market. Around 35 percent of Teridian's annual revenues are reinvested in R&D. This includes innovative IC developments that will help in serving customers across a wide variety of applications.
Currently, the company's product line for STBs include smart card readers for conditional access to programming content (80xx family), modems for two-way communication with the set-top box (19xx, 29xx, and 1822 families), Ethernet devices (21x3 and 8430 families) for IP Video applications, and universal audio/video switches (5xxx family).
"Teridian's 80xx series of smart card readers offer the industry's broadest portfolio for STB conditional access, with benefits of low power and high signal integrity," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Jayalakshmi Janakiraman. "The products are also available with power down options that are not usually found in other STB conditional access solutions."
The company's modem portfolio is equally unique. With the introduction of the world's first single package Si DAA (1822) and its counterpart for soft modem applications, Teridian is the only IC provider to offer a single passive bill-of-materials to meet worldwide requirements. Alternative solutions require component value changes or even passive circuit changes for their device to be deployed in multiple countries, resulting in additional costs for the OEM.
Further, Teridian offers the world's smallest Ethernet physical layer interface (2123). Both the IC's compact design and reduced surrounding passive circuitry save as much as 50 percent costs over alternative solutions. Teridian's Ethernet Media Offload Controller (8430) specifically addresses the quality-of-delivery requirements of IP Video and other mixed media Ethernet applications.
"2007 was a year of achievements for Teridian - the company achieved a major milestone by shipping its 100 millionth IC for STBs and announced a reference design with STMicroelectronics' processor product family, thereby enabling customers to develop innovative products within a short period," notes Janakiraman. "In November 2007, Teridian announced its partnership with Sony, under which the latter uses Teridian's 80xx series of smart card readers for conditional access besides successfully completing re-certification as a Sony Green Partner - a stringent vendor qualification program."
Already, Teridian is the market leader in consumer audio-video conditional access applications in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Japan and China. The domestic STB and digital TV (DTV) consumption in China has been driving the growth of Teridian's product portfolio.
Teridian has partnerships with market-leading processor suppliers and believes that its customers benefit from these partnerships, both for their development and production activities.
Teridian's customer-focused technological innovation and its growing share in STB IC market make it a deserving recipient of the 2007 World Set-top Box Semiconductors Market Frost & Sullivan Award for Emerging Company of the Year.
Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has emerged as a significant participant within its industry.
