RCN Kicks Off 2008 Lehigh Valley Market Expansion with Franchise Approval to Bring High-Speed Internet, Cable & Phone Competition to Slatington Borough

Business Wire, Feb 19, 2008

Local Franchise Marks Company's Fifth Pennsylvania Market Added Since Last July

HERNDON, Va. -- RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of video, data, and voice services to residential, business and commercial/carrier customers, today announced that RCN has been granted a local franchise to bring competitive choice in data, telecommunications and cable services to Slatington Borough in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

With the addition of Slatington Borough, RCN now provides service to 75 Lehigh Valley and other Pennsylvania communities. This local franchise marks the fifth Lehigh Valley community added to RCN's advanced digital, fiber optic network since last April and the first to be added in 2008.

"We are excited that we continue to expand within Lehigh Valley and that we can now offer a competitive choice to Slatington consumers," said RCN President of Residential Markets and Pennsylvania General Manager John Filipowicz. "We believe RCN is the right choice for them because of our high tech, fiber optic network; internet speeds that are faster than anything currently available in Lehigh Valley; high-quality phone and cable television services, including our local community focus in programming and Video on Demand content; and our excellent customer service."

In 2007, RCN was named Best of the Valley in the categories of Best Cable Company and Best Internet Service Provider in Lehigh Valley Magazine's annual Best of the Valley readers' survey. In addition, readers of the Morning Call newspaper also recognized RCN as the best cable television provider and best telephone provider for 2007 and one of the best internet service providers.

"By this summer, residents of Slatington will be able to select from RCN's broad range of services including its triple-play bundle, which combines internet, television, and phone services with the convenience of one bill and integrated customer service and technical support," Filipowicz added. "We intend to work very hard to demonstrate to residents that we deserve to be their home town service provider of choice."

For example, RCN features more than 160 local remote sports productions a year. Events include high school football, basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, and tennis as well as Lafayette College football and men's and women's basketball. In addition, RCN produces local televised community programs, such as Connections, RCN Sports Talk, Community Spotlight and the Jolly Joe Timmer Show.

RCN is also the first cable provider in the Lehigh Valley area to offer local Video on Demand. In fact, in most of the Lehigh Valley communities RCN serves, it is the only one who provides a Video on Demand service that includes movies, both new releases and old favorites, independent films, children's programs, events and content from major program channels.

Slatington Borough residents will be contacted by RCN representatives as service becomes available in each neighborhood. Information about services offered by RCN can also be accessed at any time at www.rcn.com or by calling 1-800-RING-RCN.
