Gotuit Video Notebook[TM] Allows Students To Personalize Lecture Videos

WOBURN, Mass. -- Gotuit, a leading provider of video metadata technologies, announced today that Carleton University has deployed Carleton University VideoNotes, an on-line video portal powered by Gotuit that lets students view, index, annotate, remix, search, and share class lectures to create an interactive, on-demand eLearning experience.

"By allowing students to create their own lecture highlight reels with their own comments and annotations, we are providing a rich, personalized learning and enhanced studying experience." said Patrick Lyons, Manager, Instructional Innovation, Carleton University. "We believe students will get great value from being able to search the lecture videos to find the precise topic or concept they are interested in reviewing, then see their classmate's notes and playlists for that topic. VideoNotes is an example of how we continue to integrate technology and expand the educational experience at Carleton University."

Carleton University Television, CUTV, has been offering credit courses to students on-campus and those at a distance on television and by videotape (now DVD) for thirty years. Now in year three, CUTV also offers all its courses to students by Streaming Video through its Video-on-Demand service. "VideoNotes has the potential to really add value to our existing services. Students will have the ability to highlight their course lecture videos for review the same way they would use a highlighter to mark portions of their textbooks and written notes." said Jeff Cohen, Manager, CUTV, Carleton University.

VideoNotes will initially include the full length video from each lecture, uploaded shortly after class. Students will then be able to index the video by marking the key segments and adding their own information, such as Note Title, Description, and Keywords. All this metadata is searchable by the community, allowing them to search inside the lectures to particular segments of interest. Students can then compile the key segments across the lectures into Video Notebooks for particular topics and study guides. Students can send links and share their Video Notebooks with the community.

"More and more universities are capturing the video of their lectures and Gotuit's Video Notebook is a great way to allow students to further engage with that video and make it a compelling part of the learning process, "said Mark Pascarella, CEO of Gotuit. "Using the Gotuit approach of harnessing metadata allows Carleton to deploy a solution that does not require editing videos or storing new videos for each student's VideoNotes. This means it is easy to implement and easy to scale. We see offerings like Video Notebook becoming a core component for many educational institutions moving forward."
