Five New Members Join SDR Forum

DENVER -- The SDR Forum (www.sdrforum.org) announced today that five government/nonprofit organizations - DEAL; FMV, Swedish Defence Materiel Organization; Institute for Defense Analyses; Skybridge Spectrum Foundation; and TNO - have joined the Forum as new members.

A brief snapshot of each company:

DEAL (www.drdo.org) -- Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL) DEAL was founded in 1965 in Mussoorie (Uttarakhand), India; it was then known as the Himalayan Radio Propagation Unit. In 1968, the lab was shifted from Mussoorie to Dehradun (Uttarakhand) and in 1976 renamed as the Defense Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL). Since then, DEAL has expanded into a "major system laboratory" of the Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO), Ministry of Defense.

FMV, Swedish Defence Materiel Organization (www.fmv.se) - An independent civil authority, its primary task is to provide the Swedish Armed Forces with materiel, systems and methods.

Institute for Defense Analyses (www.ida.org) - Located in Alexandria, VA, the nonprofit corporation administers three federally funded research and development centers to assist the U.S. government in addressing national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.

Skybridge Spectrum Foundation (http://web.mac.com/warrenhavens/iWeb/Site 2/Telesaurus.html) - Based in Berkeley, CA, the foundation provides long-range location and communication RF bridges into vehicles for ITS-specific wireless networks in the U.S., integrated with DSRC 5.9 GHz, 4.9 GHz, unlicensed mobile WLANs, as well as CMRS and PMRS systems.

TNO (www.tno.nl) - Located in The Hague, Netherlands, the scientific consulting/market research firm focuses on five core areas - Quality of Life; Defence, Security and Safety; Science and Industry; Built Environment and Geosciences; and Information and Communication Technology.

More information on joining the SDR Forum will be available at the SDR Forum's 58th General Meeting in Rome, Italy from April 14-17. Technical, business and government leaders worldwide will gather to discuss key issues related to SDR technology and its deployment. Among the highlights of this meeting will be a plenary presentation by Motorola Program Manager Didier Bourse introducing the E3 (End-to-End Efficiency) program, a plenary roundtable session led by innovITS CEO Phil Pettitt exploring the use of software defined and cognitive radio technologies in intelligent transportation systems.

Other activities will include continued advancement of the cognitive use cases and the trade study on the multi-service portable radios by the Forum's Public Safety Special Interest Group as well as work on the meta-language for mobility use cases and scenario analysis, the cognitive nomenclature document, response to ITU-R WP5A questions on cognitive radio, the specification on securing software reconfigurable communications technologies, and a number of relevant APIs (application programming interfaces) by the Technical Committee. In addition, the Regulatory Committee will provide a plenary summary on the initial results of the SDR Forum regulatory request for information, which will be used as a basis for defining the Forum's international regulatory agenda.
