Business Wire, Feb 26, 2008

New Course Offered as a Part of University's New Device Software Engineering Program

IRVINE, Calif. -- To meet the demand for highly-skilled embedded software engineers, the University of California, Irvine Extension has developed a new specialized studies program, Device Software Engineering. In addition to establishing the new study program, UC Irvine Extension created a foundational software engineering course titled, "Linux Driver Primer," which will be held online beginning March 31.

"Linux Driver Primer" will explain how to develop and write code for Linux device drivers. Additionally, participants will gain knowledge of how to build and grow Linux device frameworks from scratch. This course offers foundational information about software programming and is a critical part of the new Device Software Engineering Program.

"I am very excited to announce UC Irvine Extension's creation of this new course as well as the Device Software Engineering study program," explains Rogelio C. Rodriguez, director of engineering and science programs at UC Irvine Extension. "Our courses will provide up-to-date information and utilize local professionals as instructors. I believe this specialized study program will continue to grow Orange County's embedded computer engineering industry."

Participants will be able to construct software code, write a Linux device driver and recognize how applications communicate with designed devices. They will also determine how to avoid common pitfalls by applying the newly learned programming techniques.

The course will be led by Aaron Baranoff, co-founder of MataiTech LLC, who has 20 years of experience developing software and drivers for embedded microprocessors. Baranoff will also be able to share his extensive expertise designing and delivering portable device drivers.
