The US is the Single-Largest Importer of China-Made Costume Jewelry, Absorbing 39 Percent of the Country's Exports - China Sourcing Report: Costume Jewelry 2008

Business Wire, Feb 26, 2008

DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c84067) has announced the addition of China Sourcing Report: Costume Jewelry 2008 to their offering.

China continues to be the world's dominant producer of costume jewelry, accounting for approximately half of global supply. The 5,000-plus supplier base exports more than US$1 billion worth of necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, anklets and brooches annually.

In 2007, rising raw material and labor costs forced China suppliers to adopt various coping strategies such as reducing material wastage, improving efficiency and expanding capacity. Nonetheless, the majority still plan to raise prices up to 10 percent in the coming months.

Many suppliers also are shifting toward high-end production to avoid fierce competition in the low-end segment. These companies will upgrade existing facilities by replacing old equipment or purchasing sophisticated machinery.

With the help of this report, you too can profit from this dynamic industry.

This report will answer questions such as:

* How will rising production costs affect pricing in the next 12 months?

* Which suppliers are moving upmarket?

China continues to be the world's foremost producer of costume jewelry, accounting for approximately half of global supply. Exports have been increasing in the past few years, and strong growth is still the trend.

Sales in the first 11 months of 2007 have already hit US$1 billion. If current growth rates are sustained, exports for the full year could reach US US$1.2 billion.

The US is the single-largest importer of China-made costume jewelry, absorbing 39 percent of the country's exports. Combined imports from EU member countries accounted for 19 percent of China's shipments.

The country's more than 5,000 suppliers make products mainly for OEM clients. Such models account for about 70 percent of exports.

ODM orders take up around 25 percent of shipments and OBM jewelry constitutes the rest.

Low-end models represent approximately 55 percent of outbound volume, midrange models 30 percent and high-end designs the rest.

The following are some of the key trends we see in China's costume jewelry industry:

* Rising material and labor costs will force suppliers to raise prices in 2008, although keen competition will cap increases to 10 percent.

* The majority of makers will continue to increase their production capacity to meet surging demand. Most companies will be upgrading their existing facilities, replacing or bringing in advanced equipment to boost production efficiency.

* Although low-end costume jewelry will remain China's mainstay for the next several years, there is steady growth in upscale manufacture. Companies are continuing to shift out of low-end production to strengthen competitiveness.

* Synthetic gemstones, and Baroqueor Victorian-era designs will feature strongly in upcoming releases.

China makers can offer most types of costume jewelry, which can be broken up into many categories. For the purposes of this report, costume jewelry is divided into five major categories: bracelets & anklets, chokers & necklaces, earrings, rings and brooches.

While most suppliers offer a range of costume jewelry across all categories, some specialize in one or two lines.
