Membership Affirms Commitment to WLAN and Integrated Broadband Solutions
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. -- InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) today announced that the company has joined the Wi-Fi Alliance[R], a global, non-profit industry trade association with more than 300 member companies devoted to promoting the growth of wireless local area networks (WLAN). InterDigital has been active in the 802.11 standards bodies for many years and by joining the Wi-Fi Alliance, the company will be better positioned for integrating WLAN capabilities into its wireless broadband solutions.
"InterDigital is pleased to join the Wi-Fi Alliance," said James J. Nolan, InterDigital's Executive Vice President, Engineering. "WLAN connectivity is a great complement to the SlimChip[TM] Mobile Broadband Modem solutions we are bringing to the market. Furthermore, it is a natural fit with our offering in 802.21 middleware - delivering seamless mobility between any cellular technology, WLAN, and any other air interface. This is critical in meeting consumer expectations for anywhere, anytime ubiquitous broadband coverage with the highest throughput, reliability, and the lowest cost."
"In becoming a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, InterDigital joins more than 300 companies from around the globe who are committed to delivering interoperable Wi-Fi[R] solutions and ensuring a positive user experience through our Wi-Fi CERTIFIED[TM] programs," said Wi-Fi Alliance Executive Director, Edgar Figueroa. "We are pleased to have them become a part of the organization."
The Wi-Fi Alliance works to enable the growth of the Wi-Fi industry through interoperability testing of products based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, and through promotion of Wi-Fi capabilities to consumers and users in the home, convergence, enterprise and managed access markets. Analysts predict that the market for converged handsets is expected to reach 325 million units in 2011 (ABI Research). WLAN and mobile/cellular technologies combine to offer a rich broadband experience - numerous major carriers have announced plans for Wi-Fi mobile services.
