Stationary Cycling Fundraiser Kicks off Local Events for Amgen Tour of California
SAN FRANCISCO -- Today, professional cyclist and San Carlos resident Brian Buchholz joins teammate Keven Lacombe and San Franciscans to support the fight against cancer during PedalFest 2008, a stationary cycling fundraiser in which miles pedaled earn matched dollars. A pre-event leading up to the 2008 Amgen Tour of California, a professional road cycling race, PedalFest will take place at Union Bank of California in downtown San Francisco, 400 California Street. Buchholz and Lacombe ride for the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast Pro Cycling team.
Between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., individuals are invited to ride a stationary bike for five minutes for a $5 donation. PedalFest's event organizers will each donate $1 for every mile ridden to support Breakaway from Cancer[TM], which raises awareness and funds for cancer patients and their caregivers.
"We feel this is a great way to help those who are battling cancer and show our company's commitment to an important cause," said Julius Robinson, Union Bank of California's market president. Additional PedalFest 2008 events will be held at Union Bank of California locations in Solvang (January 26) and Los Angeles (January 29).
Founded in 2005 by Amgen, Breakaway from Cancer[TM] is a complementary component to the company's title sponsorship of the Amgen Tour of California. The initiative raises awareness and funds for The Wellness Community and the National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship. "Just as in professional cycling, where it takes a solid support team to help a rider breakaway from the pack, it takes a team to fight cancer," said Mary Klem, Amgen director of corporate communications.
Showcasing more than 650 miles of scenic California highways, roadways and coastline drives, the 2008 Amgen Tour of California will take place from February 17 to February 24, bringing professional cycling to the California coast for a third consecutive year. The race begins on Sunday, February 17 with a Prologue in Palo Alto, Calif., followed by the first stage from Sausalito to Santa Rosa on Monday, February 18.
