Customer Reduces Environmental Impact, Realizes Cost and Time Savings with Attachmate's PC Lifecycle Management Tool

SEATTLE -- Attachmate Corporation today announced that the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in the United Kingdom relies upon Attachmate([R]) WinINSTALL([R]) PC lifecycle management tool, achieving cost and resource savings. Extending beyond standard PC lifecycle management functions, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea also leverages WinINSTALL's wide array of solutions to lessen the Borough's impact on the environment.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is the most densely populated local authority in the United Kingdom. Located on the west side of central London, the district's IT staff is tasked with managing approximately 4,000 personal computers for its 3,500 employees. The 80-person IT department is also responsible for procuring, installing and maintaining all of the 250 servers on site.

A core concern of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea IT team is the time and resources required to maintain, repair and upgrade their Microsoft Windows-based PCs. To make changes to a PC, install a patch or upgrade an operating system, valuable man-hours were squandered physically disconnecting and relocating PCs to the IT office. These lost hours spread the IT team's resources too thinly and compromised the quality and timeliness of their services.

"If we needed to refresh a PC, it had to be physically brought to the IT office so the software could be installed. Instead of implementing crucial upgrades and repairs to the Borough's PCs, our IT staff were spending countless hours physically moving hardware," said Barry Goodall, Support Unit Manager at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

After deploying Attachmate WinINSTALL software, the burden of physically moving the thousands of PCs needing IT support was eliminated. With WinINSTALL, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is able to automate the deployment of patches and other routine maintenance tasks.

"We were amazed by the difference. The investment in Attachmate WinINSTALL immediately started to pay huge dividends. The time saved on fewer remote visits was calculated to be worth one person's salary," continued Barry.

Beyond patch management, the Borough utilizes WinINSTALL to meet other IT needs, including software deployment, software packaging, inventory and asset management.

Through its use of WinINSTALL for inventory management, the Borough identified a problem within their organization. An inventory check of machines logged onto the network in the early morning hours demonstrated that hundreds of PCs were being left on overnight, resulting in wasted energy and higher energy consumption costs. The Borough was then able to power down their PCs at night, saving the group more than 30 tons of CO2 a year.
