Kyocera and BPA Architecture Promote the "Greening" of San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Kyocera (NYSE:KYO) and BPA Architecture Planning Interiors announced today that design has been completed for Kyocera's Class A office building at 8775 Balboa Avenue in the Kearny Mesa community of San Diego. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2008, with completion planned for first quarter 2009.

BPA and Kyocera are committed to environmentally friendly construction as outlined by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System[TM] of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Designed by BPA Principal Darrel Fullbright, this four-story, 104,000 square-foot building has been environmentally engineered from its inception and has received LEED-CS pre-certification. To date, only 18 buildings in San Diego County are similarly LEED-CS pre-certified, according to Stephen L. Kapp of the USGBC's San Diego Chapter; and only one finished building in California has achieved an actual LEED-CS certification (silver level).

As green building and sustainable design gain momentum, architects and engineers have found innovative ways to design projects that are eco-friendly and bottom-line boosting, such as incorporating electricity-producing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Kyocera is one of the world's largest vertically-integrated producers and suppliers of solar energy products. The new Kyocera building will showcase an 18-kilowatt solar PV system designed by Kyocera, using Kyocera PV modules.

The building will join Kyocera's original, award-winning Solar Grove[TM], a 235-kilowatt solar carport at its North American headquarters on Balboa Avenue near State Route 163, as Kyocera's latest effort to expand the deployment of PV systems locally.

Joining Mr. Fullbright and the BPA design team are Hope Engineering for structural engineering; McParlane & Associates for mechanical and plumbing engineering; and Michael Wall Engineering for electrical engineering. Brad Block of CB Richard Ellis will represent the building on behalf of developer Kyocera International, Inc.

BPA has completed four buildings in Kearny Mesa for top companies including California Coast Credit Union and Waxie Sanitary Supply. This region of San Diego now boasts over 450,000 square feet of Class A office space designed by BPA.
