Foundation Coal Announces Key Staff Appointment in Center of Excellence

LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md. -- Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:FCL) today announced that Gary M. Buchan has joined the company in the position of Vice President, Business Process Support. In his new role, Mr. Buchan will coordinate efforts across the organization to integrate business process activities with information systems. He will work in Foundation's Center of Excellence which was established in 2007 in conjunction with Foundation's move to new, state-of-the-art enterprise systems. Reporting to Buchan will be business process experts representing the functional areas of sales, production planning, maintenance, human resources, finance and materials management.
Mr. Buchan was employed at Peabody Energy for the past 18 months as Director, Process Improvement for underground operations. Prior to 2006, he was employed at Foundation Coal and its predecessor companies for 20 years, holding positions which included Director, Business Development and Manager, Technical Services for Twentymile Coal Company. He serves as the 2008 Chair of the Coal & Energy Division for the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) and maintains a professional engineering license in the states of Colorado and Maryland.
