Borders is executing an aggressive program to close underperforming stores in the Waldenbooks Specialty Retail Segment in order to better focus resources on its core US superstore business. The company plans to reduce the number of Waldenbooks stores from 564 in 2006 to approximately 300 by the end of 2008.

The company plans to reinvigorate its superstores in the US by improving its assortment of key and impulse items. Borders also plans to add more feature tables in these stores for customer convenience. In addition, the company also intends to make merchandise presentation more effectiveness in these stores.
