Dassault Systemes Launches International Contest for Virtual Reality Experience and 3D Entertainment
Business Wire, June 10, 2008
Competition to Invent a Multiplatform 3D Real Time Application for the General Public with 3DVIA Virtools Technology
SURESNES, France -- Dassault Syst[c]mes (DS) (Paris:DSY) (NASDAQ:DASTY), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, today announced its international Virtual Reality (VR) Experience and 3D Entertainment contest in partnership with La Geode, Laval Virtual and Barco. The contest, which is open for project proposals May 22-September 12, 2008, challenges competitors to invent a multiplatform 3D real time application geared towards the general public using 3DVIA Virtools technology.
"The world of general public entertainment is reaching a new paradigm, lead by VR technologies for immersive, interactive, emotionally-charged experiences in 3D," says Mehdi Tayoubi, director of interactive media at Dassault Syst[c]mes. "Dassault Syst[c]mes is committed to innovation and with this contest is helping to create a next generation of VR creatives."
A good example of this sort of entertainment is Dassault Syst[c]mes' Khufu Revealed project, whereby Dassault Syst[c]mes launched the first-ever live VR show at La Geode. The famous sphere was transformed into the world's biggest VR venue, combining 3DVIA Virtools technology with BARCO's projection systems, creating a 400 meters squared real-time 3D image. Now 7 days a week, schoolchildren and the general public can "travel back in time" to explore in real time how the Great Pyramid was probably built. In addition, the public can have complimentary experiences by exploring the 3D interactive application online at anytime.
The contest's winning proposal may be produced and featured at La Geode. The jury will pre-select 10 submissions to be developed and presented for the final competition at the next Laval Virtual, Europe's largest annual Virtual Reality conference. Prizes include a BARCO stereoscopic projector valued at EU75,000 and 3DVIA Virtools licenses.
