Business Wire, June 10, 2008
ViewSonic Recognized for Data and Integration Mastery in Its Creation of a Multi-Enterprise SOA
DUBLIN, Ohio -- Sterling Commerce, an AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) subsidiary, today announced that its customer ViewSonic, a leading global provider of visual display products, was selected by Managing Automation as a winner in the fourth annual Progressive Manufacturing 50 Awards. The Progressive Manufacturing 50 Awards Program recognizes 50 projects that have achieved distinction in a core discipline defined by Managing Automation as critical to business success in the years ahead. ViewSonic was recognized for its data and integration mastery.

ViewSonic develops, markets and supports a broad range of innovative products including LCD monitors, LCD TVs, projectors, digital signage displays and other display products. ViewSonic implemented a true multi-enterprise service-oriented architecture (SOA) to create a foundation for data and process integration that could be used across its large and diverse community of suppliers and customers. The multi-enterprise SOA has allowed ViewSonic to integrate its business processes and IT systems with its partners' - including Office Depot, Amazon, Circuit City, Costco, Fry's, Dixons and, most recently, eBay - to quickly and effectively unload excess inventory and open new distribution channels.
"ViewSonic defines itself as a company that's easy to do business with. To deliver on this promise to suppliers and customers, each business process that touches external organizations must be flexible and reliable," said Paul Gonzalez, Global IT for ViewSonic. "Leveraging multi-enterprise SOA, ViewSonic now provides its business managers and partners with unified, integrated, near real-time data that allows them to be more nimble and make business decisions based on accurate information. With these better business decisions comes competitive advantage."
ViewSonic processes nearly 2 million transactions each year, sources various product components from hundreds of different suppliers from multiple locations around the world and delivers its finished products to thousands upon thousands of retailers and channel partners. ViewSonic deployed its multi-enterprise SOA using the Gentran Integration Suite (GIS) from Sterling Commerce. GIS allowed ViewSonic to create, manage and deploy a consistent set of business services across diverse technologies and standards that are used across internal and external organizational boundaries.
By viewing SOA more as a design philosophy than a technology choice, ViewSonic has created an integration infrastructure conducive to rapid change. ViewSonic IT is now able to put less energy and fewer resources toward troubleshooting and managing integration, freeing it up to focus on growing the business and adapting to changing market conditions. Now that a foundation for data and process integration has been laid with multi-enterprise SOA, future integration initiatives will take hours instead of weeks, allowing it to rapidly respond to new business opportunities with partners who are on disparate connectivity technology.
"ViewSonic represents an innovative company leveraging today's technology to prepare for the future," said Richard Douglass, global manufacturing industry executive at Sterling Commerce. "To compete, manufacturers must interact with hundreds, if not thousands, of trading partners using disparate business-to-business protocols as well support the largely manual ordering processes of small to mid-sized businesses. Sterling Commerce integration solutions augment and extend traditional enterprise resource planning (ERP) and other legacy systems to enable manufacturers to outpace their competition using supply chain agility and adaptability as a differentiator."
The winners of the Progressive Manufacturing 50 Awards will be honored at the Progressive Manufacturing Black Tie Gala, which will be held June 12, the last day of the 2008 Progressive Manufacturing Summit, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas.
