Technical Impact Award in Honor of Richard Newton's Legacy Announced Today at Design Automation Conference

Annual Award Jointly Sponsored by IEEE Council on EDA, ACM SIGDA to Recognize Individuals Who Have Influenced EDA
NEW YORK -- A yearly award for outstanding technical contributions to the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) honoring the late Dr. Richard Newton was announced today during the 45th Design Automation Conference (DAC).
DAC runs today through Friday, June 13, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. Details are available at www.dac.com.
The "A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation" will be sponsored by the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA) and the ACM Special Interest Group in Design Automation (ACM SIGDA).
The award is named for Richard Newton, a luminary in design automation academia and industry, and dean of engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, who died in 2007. It will be presented to an individual or individuals for their outstanding technical contributions to EDA, recognized over a significant period of time. The qualification will be based on a high-impact, seminal paper published by either ACM or IEEE nominees at least 10 years ago.
"Richard Newton embodied the idea of technical impact that this award seeks to recognize," says John Darringer, president of CEDA. "In honoring his great legacy, we intend to recognize individuals who have influenced technology, industry or education, or working electronic designers and engineers."
Adds Diana Marculescu, chair of ACM SIGDA: "Throughout his brilliant career, Richard Newton had a wonderful capacity for creative thinking that spawned others toward innovative thinking or new techniques that have been put into practice. We wish to keep that essence of him alive."
