Rich Web 2.0 Portal Boosts Productivity for Business Users and Administrators
MIAMISBURG, Ohio -- Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the global leader in enterprise data warehousing, today introduced Teradata Viewpoint, a web-based system management solution to manage and monitor Teradata system performance and availability from virtually anywhere.
In addition to helping database and system administrators be more productive, business users can now track their own queries, check system availability and make business decisions about their daily work without calling upon the database administrators or help desk.
"Teradata Viewpoint makes managing and monitoring multiple Teradata warehouses from a single location simple and easy," said Scott Gnau, chief development officer, Teradata Corporation. "This solution allows our customers to provide a self-service portal to their business users, information technology managers and database managers enabling them to customize the portal content to suit their individual role and job function. By providing users immediate, simple and direct access to the information, without depending on the database administrator, they are able to make informed decisions about their daily work. Their productivity and effectiveness increases, which allows them more time to focus on strategic activities that directly support business growth."
It is essential that users have an effective set of system monitoring and management tools as data warehouses become increasingly mission critical and as new functions and applications are incorporated. Teradata Viewpoint was designed to give personalized, direct and always-available enterprise-wide access to key system information enabling users to view system health, check on the status of their in-flight queries, analyze trend reports and even check when the system is the least busy.
According to Gnau, "We asked one database administrator who beta-tested Teradata Viewpoint what he most liked about it. He quickly responded that his phone had stopped ringing and he wasn't inundated with status requests from his business users anymore. The administrator said that his users are now able to resolve their own issues and check on their own queries, allowing him to focus on higher value activities."
Teradata Viewpoint is the first in a new wave of solutions that will move Teradata's system monitoring and management tools off the desktop and into the browser. It consists of hardware and software built around open standards and open source, and provides an extensible portal platform for delivering rich client applications to the entire enterprise. Teradata Viewpoint is accessible from anywhere in the world with Mozilla Firefox[R] 2.0 or Windows Internet Explorer[R] version 6 or 7.
"Since Teradata Viewpoint is web-based," said Gnau, "customers deploying it can dramatically lower their total cost of ownership (TCO) for system monitoring tools since upgrades can be accomplished from a single, easy to manage location, and the pain and frustration of updating possibly hundreds of individual client desktops is eliminated."
In the first release, Teradata Viewpoint will be available with eleven portlets, reusable web applications built in Java, each focusing on a specialized database monitoring function. These include My Queries, System Health, Viewpoint Calendar, Canary Response Times, External Content, Productivity, Heat Map, Query Monitor, Metrics Graph, Today's Statistics and Filtered Queries. For more detailed information see the Teradata Viewpoint white paper available at http://www.teradata.com/t/page/179817/index.html.
> In addition to the eleven pre-built portlets, Teradata Viewpoint comes with a Portlet Development Kit that enables customers and third party vendors to develop and deploy custom portlets to meet management or monitoring needs, no matter how unique or obscure. Customers can also leverage Teradata Professional Services for custom portlet development.About Teradata
