Interface's John Bradford Discusses Innovation Through Biomimicry on Invention Machine's Sustainable Innovation Podcast Series

Business Wire,  June 17, 2008

Invention Machine

Companies today are faced with the dual challenge of innovating eco-friendly products and creating sustainable businesses to compete in the global economy. To meet these challenges, a handful of companies are using biomimicry to create innovative and sustainable products. Biomimicry studies how nature solves problems and then imitates this behavior in designing green products. For Interface, a $1.1B carpet manufacturer, sustainability is at the heart of its innovation efforts, from designing and manufacturing eco-friendly products to operations and marketing.

In this video podcast, John Bradford discusses why Interface started mimicking nature to design eco-friendly products, how to turn concepts into design and offers tips on product innovation through biomimicry. Bradford also shares Interface's ideation process, called "Out of the Box," which involves understanding customers' problems and innate desires, employing biomimicry to develop ideas based on how nature solves these problems, and validating these ideas with Invention Machine's innovation software.

Invention Machine's Sustainable Innovation podcast features innovation thought leaders and practitioners. The series is designed to help companies' better tackle innovation challenges and learn what global organizations are doing to sustain their product innovation processes.
