MRV Releases Packet Optical Networking Solution to Support Growing Demand for Carrier Ethernet Transport Networks

Business Wire,  June 18, 2008

New LambdaDriver[R] OPN1600 MPLS Optical Packet Solution Offers Packet SLA and Bandwidth Management Integrated with Tunable WDM Transport

CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- MRV Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRVC), a leading provider of products and services for WDM and optical transport, metro Ethernet switches and routers, and fiber optic components, today announced the new LambdaDriver[R] OPN1600, the first optical packet blade in a series of products from the company that combine packet switching with optical transport for carriers migrating to next-generation hybrid packet-optical networks. The LambdaDriver OPN1600 is being announced as part of NXTcomm 2008 and is on display in MRV's booth (SU6507).

MRV's LambdaDriver[R] is the industry's first packet optical transport network (POTN) solution to support both multi-degree ROADM (all optical - or OOO) and optical-electronic-optical (OEO) cross connect functionality in the same solution. This capability is integrated with LambdaDriver's support for services ranging from T1/E1 to 40 Gbps WDM in the same wavelength-switching chassis.

In addition, the LambdaDriver supports both TDM transport and Metro Ethernet connection-oriented packet traffic simultaneously with advanced traffic management. It enables a smooth migration from SONET/SDH to Metro Ethernet optical transport networks.

"Based on 20 years of innovation in packets and optical technology, MRV's LambdaDriver product is the first solution to support end-to-end, optical packet networking with cost effectiveness at the edge and capacity and bandwidth for the core," said Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. "The new blade allows our customers to combine Metro Ethernet packet transport with tunable wavelength switching to meet their demands for higher bandwidth optical services with advanced SLA and traffic management."

The new OPN1600-8C2 module has eight Gigabit Metro Ethernet transport ports for network access connections. These ports can set any-to-any mapping policy to two 10GE LAN/WAN Metro MPLS transport uplinks. The dual 10GE uplink interfaces support IEEE802.3ae-compliant 10GE WAN mode for bi-directional 10GE transmission over SONET/SDH (OC192/STM-64). This solution provides end-to-end data transmission over local-, regional- and metropolitan-area fiber-optic networks with a direct connection to SONET/SDH using corresponding rate and framing.

The OPN1600-8C2 module offers innovative multi-layer SLA management from physical-layer light paths to packet level QoS, ensuring end-to-end visibility for transport and packet services under the same unified control plane. This integration brings outstanding service flexibility in network design and improved SLAs for service providers.

The OPN1600 enables end-to-end optical & packet mapping with sub 50ms recovery time and 99.999% availability to support the highest reliability required in carrier transport services. To provide enhanced service OAM (IEEE802.1ag / ITU-T Y.1731) and end-to-end packet optical service management capabilities, the LambdaDriver's OPN solution incorporates unique integration of Ethernet over MPLS edge and GMPLS optical transport control plane with carrier Ethernet to match the best packet and reconfigurable DWDM capabilities.

Availability

The OPN1600 module is available now. Customers interested in the LambdaDriver[R] platform and its capabilities can find more information on the MRV website at www.mrv.com.

About the MRV's LambdaDriver Platforms

MRV's LambdaDriver WDM platforms provide flexible CWDM and DWDM solutions, enabling enterprises to build campus-wide backbone networks and service providers to create new revenue opportunities due to more efficient use of their existing fiber infrastructure. Three different active chassis (LD400, LD800 and LD1600) and 2 passive chassis (LPD100 and LDP300) with interchangeable modules provide a solution for any network size and service density. Transparent transport allows support for all high-speed LAN, WAN or SAN services. The sub-rate TDM technology allows even more efficient use of the available fiber by aggregating low rate protocols over one wavelength. The LambdaDriver platforms support both CWDM and DWDM technologies, thus enabling a cost efficient initial investment in infrastructure with CWDM and a smooth upgrade path towards full capacity DWDM networks. LambdaDriver platforms are NEBS certified for use in U.S. carrier central office applications. For more information, please visit http://www.mrv.com/wdm/prod_ld.php.
