Sleep HealthCenters® Brings Sleep Testing Home!

Business Wire,  June 24, 2008

BRIGHTON, Mass. -- Sleep HealthCenters, a network of specialized sleep medicine centers and the largest provider of such services in Massachusetts, has announced the expansion of their home sleep testing services and the availability of 24-hour turnaround at select locations!

SHC has been performing home sleep testing for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) for over 10 years and are experts at diagnosing sleep disorders as well as providing comprehensive care that focuses on long-term management and compliance to therapy. Paul Valentine, president and CEO of Sleep HealthCenters, commented, "Medicare has appropriately changed the emphasis of management of OSA from diagnostics to demonstrating benefit from treatment, through a recent change in national coverage determination policy. As a leader in clinical sleep medicine, we have embraced the use of home sleep testing as a component in the diagnosis and long-term care of those suffering from OSA. We have the capacity to perform home sleep testing from all of our sites and look forward to working with our payors to integrate this diagnostic alternative in the best manner possible."

Dr. Lawrence J. Epstein, Sleep HealthCenters' Medical Director, noted, "Home sleep testing is a viable alternative for those patients who have had a comprehensive sleep evaluation and meet certain criteria, including insurance eligibility. Because untreated sleep apnea has been linked to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease, it is crucial that as many at-risk patients as possible be tested and treated. At Sleep HealthCenters, we continue to focus on providing expertise in every aspect of care for patients with all sleep disorders, from diagnosis, to treatment, to long-term management."

At select locations, Sleep HealthCenters is also offering 24-hour turnaround from study to treatment. A patient who is studied at home during the night can visit with a sleep specialist and be set up on therapy the following day.

It is estimated that between 12 and 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. In addition to contributing to poor health, 100,000 police-reported motor vehicle accidents per year are the direct result of driver fatigue, much of which could be caused by poor sleep due to undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorders.

Sleep HealthCenters has 14 locations throughout Eastern Massachusetts and one in New York and is affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Faulkner Hospital, Hallmark Health, Marlborough Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, McLean Hospital, New England Sinai Hospital, Southcoast Hospitals Group, and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.
