Metro took over 19 Polish operations of the hypermarket operator Geant in 2006. With this deal, the number of Metros Real hypermarkets in Poland rose to 49 locations. Again in 2006, the group acquired 85 German operations (hypermarkets) of Wal-Mart. Both these acquisitions were a part of Metros inorganic growth strategy, as they extended the brand presence of Real in Poland and Germany.
