Business Wire, June 9, 2008
June 30th Kick-off Date for Anniversary Sessions
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Young Writers' Camp, a project of the South Basin Writing Project and the College Of Liberal Arts at CSULB, is celebrating its 20th anniversary of holding writing workshops for students in grades one though 12 on the beautiful campus of California State University, Long Beach.
The camp brings together nearly 1000 students each year with acclaimed area teachers that all have California Teaching Credentials and have been trained according to the National Writing Project standards. The camp is organized into a variety of workshops that are aligned with the California Language Arts Standards. Students share their writing with peers, receive group and one-on-one instruction from teachers and teaching assistants, execute and celebrate the writing process, and learn the tools needed to perfect their writing. Each section of the camp publishes its own anthology, and family and friends attend the last day to hear each student read his or her own piece from the published book. Each student becomes a working author.
"I have been working with teachers and students to improve writing skills for my entire career," states founder and director, Dr. Ron Strahl. "This program brings elementary, middle, and high school students onto our campus each summer; they compose in our Japanese Gardens, work with gifted instructors and talk with their peers about the writing projects they are working on. We provide everything they need to be successful, and in fact many students return year after year and share with us how this program has impacted every aspect of their schooling and education."
