Turnaround Expert Sam Rovit Returns to Bain & Company after Leading Revitalization of Swift & Co. and Its Sale To JBS - World's Largest Meat Processor
Business Wire, June 9, 2008
M&A Specialist, Food Industry Expert and Author of "Mastering the Merger", Rovit Will Lead New Bain Corporate Renewal Group
NEW YORK -- Sam Rovit, former President and CEO of Swift & Company, one of the world's largest processors of beef and pork products, returns to Bain & Company as Partner and leader of newly-formed Bain Corporate Renewal Group, following last year's acquisition of the revitalized Swift by Brazil's JBS Company - now the leading beef processor.
Bain's Corporate Renewal Group (Bain CRG) unit was established to provide integrated, rapid turnaround services for equity owners of financially stressed mid-market businesses. Bain CRG brings together the firm's heritage of turnaround work, deep industry operations and strategic expertise with financial restructuring experts. Bain CRG also will provide interim leadership as part of its turnaround services.
Between his 2005 appointment as Swift CEO and his return to Bain, Rovit led a dramatic improvement in Swift's U.S. beef business while maintaining its industry leading positions in U.S. pork and Australian beef. His work at Swift won him praise for his "leadership during a very challenging time for both Swift and the beef industry."
"Sam's track record with Bain clients is truly exceptional," said Steve Ellis, Worldwide Managing Director of Bain & Company. "Coupled with his hands-on experience as a turnaround CEO, Sam brings a rare and extremely valuable mix of expertise and perspective to the service of Bain clients - exactly what we're anticipating with the creation of our Corporate Renewal Group."
From 2000 until joining Swift, Rovit headed Bain's Global M&A Practice. He joined Bain & Company in 1988 and was elected to the firm's partnership group in 1995.
"I am delighted to be back at Bain," said Rovit. "Bain's focus on helping deliver tangible results for our clients is particularly valuable in this economic downturn, as all companies are focused on their bottom line. I am excited about the Corporate Renewal Group team we've assembled and continue to grow."
Rovit is co-author of "Mastering the Merger," published by Harvard Business School Press, as well as numerous articles in Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Strategy & Leadership, Acquisitions Monthly and The European Business Journal. He also recently delivered the keynote at CFO Magazine's "Driving Financial Performance in Tough Times" conference.
He has served clients in the retail, distribution, manufacturing, telecom and consumer products sectors. His expertise includes corporate strategy, value improvement programs, turnaround situations, purchasing, customer and channel strategies and mergers and acquisitions.
Rovit earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a Master of Arts in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University where he studied military strategy and international business. He is a graduate of Duke University with a bachelor's degree in Public Policy.
