Containerized Power System Named Finalist in Inaugural European Green IT Awards; CoolAir[R] Receives Network World's 2008 Category-Breaker Award

AUSTIN, Texas -- Critical backup power systems inventor and manufacturer Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW), today announced PowerCentre[TM], its containerized power system solution and CoolAir, its backup power and cooling product each received industry accolades. PowerCentre has been named a finalist for the inaugural European Green IT Awards in the category of 'New Green IT Product by an Established Vendor.' In addition, Network World recognized CoolAir as a 2008 Category-Breaker Award winner, part of the magazine's annual Best Products package.

The company's PowerCentre solution is one of five finalists in the 'New Green IT Product' category. Hosted by Lansdown Event Management, the European Green IT Awards recognize organizations and individuals that have demonstrated innovation and drive in green IT. Winners will be announced on March 13 during an awards dinner and program at the European Green IT Summit held in London.

PowerCentre is a complete continuous power system packaged in a standard size shipping container. The system consists of a standby engine, switchgear and the Active Power integrated flywheel based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. The system can be deployed in a number of environments and is mobile, meaning it can quickly be disconnected and redeployed at another location in a short period of time. Last year, Active Power delivered its containerized mobile power systems to several European based customers delivering more than 10 megawatts (MW) of critical power protection. One of the deployments was for a disaster recovery application where Active Power delivered a total of 7.6 MW of power.

"To be nominated as a finalist in this inaugural awards program is an honor, particularly among several well known brands in the IT market," said Jim Murphy, vice president, Sales for EMEA and APAC for Active Power. "Data centre operators are striving for improved efficiencies at a lower total cost of ownership without compromising reliability. They're also faced with increasingly power hungry servers that require more power in smaller spaces. Power Centre is able to address these concerns in a space saving containerized package."

For the Network World 2008 Category-Breaker Award, winners were selected by columnists and bloggers and announced on Feb. 25, 2008. The full Network World article can be found at http://www.networkworld.com/bestproducts/2008/. Active Power offers the only commercially available UPS solution that provides both backup power and backup cooling.

"The Category-Breaker award winners we selected represent some of the very best products that address the industry's biggest pain points," said James Gaskin, a columnist for Network World as well as a technology consultant and speaker (www.gaskin.com). "Active Power's solution solves a big concern, particularly among data center operators."
