Cereplast Selected by CSI/Cosmolab to Develop Bioplastic Products for Cosmetics Packaging
Business Wire, March 14, 2008
HAWTHORNE, Calif. -- Cereplast, Inc. (OTCBB:CERP), manufacturer of proprietary bio-based, sustainable plastics, announced today its partnership with CSI/Cosmolab to develop bioplastic packaging materials for cosmetics. CSI/Cosmolab manufactures injection molded plastic packaging for the cosmetics and personal care industries. The California-based company is one of the leading manufacturers of jars and closures in the U.S.
CSI/Cosmolab will use materials from the Cereplast Hybrid Resins(TM) family to develop double-walled jars and closures. The partnership with Cereplast extends CSI/Cosmolab's efforts into sustainability. The company recently introduced products made from PCR (Post Consumer Resin), a blend of recycled polypropylene resins otherwise destined for landfills.
"The Cereplast resin boasts the lowest carbon footprint of any product offered by our company," said Hiram Santana, product development manager, CSI/Cosmolab. "This is another important step in our effort to lead the industry in green initiatives."
Biopropylene(TM), the first in the Cereplast Hybrid Resins[TM] line, is comprised of 50% petroleum and 50% starch-based resin, while exhibiting similar physical characteristics as traditional polypropylene. The resin minimizes the use of new raw materials and reduces costs, serving as an environmentally responsible alternative to traditional packaging. With oil prices approaching $110 per barrel, bioplastics are an increasingly economical option to traditional petroleum-based plastic products with a low carbon footprint alternative.
"Cosmetics packaging is an ideal application for Biopropylene," said Frederic Scheer, chairman and CEO of Cereplast. "Cereplast resins offer a cost-effective means for packaging companies to enhance their sustainability without compromising on quality or esthetics."
