Epiq Systems Joins U.S. Department of Commerce 'Safe Harbor' Program

Business Wire, March 19, 2008

NEW YORK -- Epiq Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: EPIQ), a leading provider of technology solutions for the legal profession, today announced self-certification to the U.S. Department of Commerce "Safe Harbor" Privacy Principles.

"Safe Harbor certification allows us to transfer and process data with greater efficiency, better support tight client deadlines, and reflects our commitment to providing advanced international solutions," said Christopher E. Olofson, president and chief operating officer of Epiq Systems.

The European Commission issued the Directive on Data Protection in 1998, prohibiting the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that did not meet the European "adequacy" standard for privacy protection. Subsequently the U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with the European Union, established the Safe Harbor framework in 2000 to bridge the gap between the data privacy approaches of the United States and the European Union.

"As cases become increasingly complex and global in scope, our clients need greater international support," said Olofson. "Recent developments, such as becoming Safe Harbor certified, expanding our U.K. office, and launching DocuMatrix[TM] 12.0 with foreign language capabilities, have enhanced our services significantly."
