AuthenTec Adds Security and Navigation Features to ASUSTeK's First Fingerprint-enabled World Phone
Business Wire, March 19, 2008
MELBOURNE, Fla. -- AuthenTec (NASDAQ:AUTH), the world's leading provider of fingerprint sensors and solutions, announced that its fingerprint sensor helps provide security and navigation to the first fingerprint-enabled phone ever offered by ASUSTeK, one of the world's largest and fastest growing mobile device manufacturers. The M536 smart phone supports multiple cellular standards for operation worldwide and incorporates an AuthenTec fingerprint sensor to protect sensitive personal data, enable convenient access to internet portals, and serve as a user input device for on-screen navigation.
ASUS' QWERTY keyboard-equipped M536 uses AuthenTec's AES1710 fingerprint sensor for Power of Touch([R]) features including security, convenience, personalization and menu navigation. The AES1710 is a key component of the ASUS Security Manager, and helps enable device lock and unlock, folder encryption, password Bank, and 4-way rocker navigation. Millions of mobile phones already include an AuthenTec sensor to support m-commerce, online banking and for securing personal information in the event the handset is lost or stolen.
"We're pleased to collaborate with AuthenTec and their proven TruePrint-based fingerprint sensors to enhance the ASUS Security Manager of the innovative M536 so that the phone is both protected and one swipe of a finger enables faster, more convenient Internet browsing and a personalized user interface," said Dr. Alex Sun, vice president of ASUSTeK's Personal Mobile Device Business Unit.
"We're delighted that ASUSTeK, a longtime AuthenTec customer, is offering this exciting new smartphone, adding to the millions of cell phones that include an AuthenTec fingerprint sensor," said AuthenTec vice president of Wireless Products Art Stewart. "The M536 world phone is the first ASUS phone to leverage the convenient security, password replacement and increased functionality of our AES1710 sensor. The M536 also uses our TrueNav navigation feature for fluid on-screen graphic and menu navigation by tracking a user's finger motion across the sensor."
The AES1710 is AuthenTec's fourth generation fingerprint sensor for the wireless market. It is a small, low-cost, low-power, highly integrated sensor and its durable coating and advanced packaging enables integration in exposed environments such as the front face of M536. The AES1710 is based on the company's patented TruePrint technology, the only solution in volume production that reads below the surface of the skin to the live layer where a person's true fingerprint resides. This unique subsurface approach enables AuthenTec sensors to read virtually every fingerprint, every time -- a critical requirement in fingerprint-enabled mobile phones.
Available from ASUSTeK in June, the M536 uses Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 operating system and supports quad-band GSM, UMTS, HSDPA, GPRS and EDGE connectivity. The device integrates a host of powerful features, such as GPS, WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and a 3 Mega pixel camera into a compact and elegant design. Embedded with a full QWERTY keyboard and ASUS' touchlens design, the M536 provides a more intuitive experience for the composition of e-mails and other documents.
