Business Wire, March 20, 2008
NEW YORK -- About.com Health (www.about.com/health), the second-largest consumer health Web site in the U.S. (February 2008 Nielsen Online), announced today that it has appointed two new editorial directors to its staff. Sylvia Barsotti has joined About.com as director of health and parenting, and Mary Hartley has been named director of nutrition.
"Both Sylvia and Mary are incredibly valuable additions to our team as we continue to build an even stronger presence in the online health space," said Marjorie Martin, SVP and general manager, About.com Health. "We are pleased to welcome them to the About family and look forward to working together to expand our health channel."
Ms. Barsotti brings more than 25 years of editorial experience in both magazine and online publishing to About.com Health. In her new role, Ms. Barsotti will develop an editorial strategy that more closely links About's health and parenting channels, an integration that is desired by users and advertisers alike.
Prior to joining About.com Health, Ms. Barsotti was editor-in-chief at Scholastic.com, editor of Adoptive Families Magazine and executive editor of Child magazine. Ms. Barsotti was previously senior editor at Family Circle magazine, where she assigned and edited education, parenting and children's features and earned numerous awards including the Educational Press Association of America Distinguished Achievement Award and the Benjamin Fine Award Honorable Mention for Outstanding Education Reporting. She earned a B.A. in English Literature and History from Drew University.
As the director of nutrition, Ms. Hartley will be responsible for overseeing the diet and nutritional content on About.com Health's Calorie Count Plus site, a free service that provides guidance and support to dieters.
Ms. Hartley brings 30 years of clinical experience as a registered dietitian to About.com Health. Most recently, Ms. Hartley has worked in the disease management industry at QMed and at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, where she developed health risk assessments and wide scale patient and physician-based interventions to manage and measure quality of care. In her spare time, Ms. Hartley has also launched an online nutrition practice to provide diet analysis, meal planning and nutrition counseling, among other services. Ms. Hartley holds a B.S. in Food and Nutrition from the University of Rhode Island and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota.
