Apparel and Home Veteran Will Take the Reins of Regional Retailer in April

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Mervyns, a family-friendly department store, and its Board of Directors announced today the appointment of John Goodman as president and chief executive officer. Goodman is leaving Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.) as president and general manager of its Dockers[R] brand, a staple in Mervyns' menswear.

As president and CEO, Goodman will be responsible for the overall growth and direction of Mervyns and will oversee all aspects of business operations. He will assume the post on April 7th from Executive Vice President and interim CEO Chuck Kurth, who will take on an expanded role at Mervyns as chief administrative and financial officer. In that role, Kurth will oversee Mervyns' Human Resources, Legal, IT and Finance functions.

Mervyns' chairman of the board, Thomas V. Taylor, thanked Kurth for his contributions as interim CEO. "Chuck's leadership during this transition was key to aligning senior management around our core strategies and making a strong start in their execution," Taylor remarked.

According to Taylor, the three-month search culminated in Goodman's selection because "John has the credentials to take us to the next level. His success at the mid- and upper-retail tiers makes us very confident we have the right leader in place to reposition the company."

Besides leading strategic planning, product design, consumer marketing and sales for the Dockers[R] U.S. business for the past three years, Goodman served on LS&CO.'s worldwide leadership team. Prior to Levi Strauss & Co., he managed Kmart Holding Corporation's multibillion dollar apparel and home business at the company's 1,500 U.S. stores as senior vice president and chief apparel and home officer. And, at Gap, Inc., he also rose through the executive ranks developing and executing successful growth strategies for the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic brands. Goodman started his career in the Executive Training Program at Bloomingdale's.

Goodman earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1986.
