Hockey East Player of the Year and Hobey Baker Award Finalist Edges Out BC's Nathan Gerbe and BU's Peter MacArthur for College Hockey's Oldest Honor

BOSTON -- Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Al Robichaud announced today that Kevin Regan, a senior goaltender from South Boston Massachusetts who rewrote the University of New Hampshire record books for players at his position, is the winner of the 56th Walter Brown Award, which is given annually to the best American-born Division One college hockey player in New England.

Regan backstopped UNH to a 25-9-3 record and first place in Hockey East this season. A jewel of consistency between the pipes, he posted a .933 save percentage in league play and a 2.12 goals-against average, leading the league in both categories and earning Player of the Year honors. He ranked third nationally in save percentage and eleventh in goals-against. Regan's final game of the year was a magnificent 62-save performance in UNH's 5-4 triple overtime loss to Boston College in the Hockey East semifinals.

"The great thing about Kevin is the way he prepares. Not only does he have tremendous ability, but he trains real hard too. He comes up with the big save when we need it. In every game this year, Kevin gave us an opportunity to win," said UNH coach Dick Umile.

For his career at UNH that still has 2008 NCAA Tournament competition looming, Regan is the program's all-time leader in saves with 3,208; in save percentage with .929; in games played with 111; and in wins with 70. His career goals-against average of 2.25 trails only Ty Conklin, a 2001 co-winner of the Walter Brown Award.

Regan was a ninth round pick of the Boston Bruins in the 2003 National Hockey League draft. He and Boston College junior Nathan Gerbe are the two Hockey East players to be named finalists for the 2008 Hobey Baker Award. Gerbe, from Oxford, Michigan, finished second to Regan in the Walter Brown Award voting. He leads the nation in scoring with 289 goals and 29 assists and was named Most Valuable Player as the Eagles won the 2008 Hockey East championship.

Peter MacArthur, who along with Regan was a Walter Brown Award semifinalist a year ago, finished a strong third in the voting. The Clifton Park, New York senior ranks tenth nationally in scoring with 21 goals and 25 assists for 45 points. His leadership was a prime factor in the Terriers' late season surge to a second place finish in Hockey East after a sluggish start to the year.

"New Hampshire was the second highest scoring team in Hockey East this year, but they were far and away the best team defensively," noted committee chairman Tim Costello. "They had 54 goals scored against them in league play; the next best showing in that category was Providence with 66. That's a very large differential. For the second year in a row, Kevin Regan made a very good New Hampshire team into a superior one."

The 56th Walter Brown Award will be presented at the New England Hockey Writers' dinner on Wednesday, April 16 in Saugus, Mass. For a full list of award winners, go to www.gridclubofgreaterboston.com/awards.php.>
