NYISO Announces FERC Commissioner Kelly and PSC Chairman Brown to Address "True Grid" Event

Symposium and Technology Expo scheduled for May 8-9 in Albany, NY

RENSSELAER, N.Y. -- The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) announced today that Suedeen G. Kelly, a Commissioner at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and Garry A. Brown, Chairman of the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) will be featured speakers at the May 8 session of its True Grid: Advanced Metering and New Technologies Symposium and Technology Expo.

Commissioner Kelly co-chairs the Smart Grid Collaborative recently created by FERC and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) to convene a dialogue on facilitating the transition to an automated - or "smart" - grid. Chairman Brown is one of the state utility commissioners named by NARUC to serve on the joint federal-state initiative.

The "smart grid" would incorporate technologies providing more sophisticated metering, two-way communications systems, and other technical innovations. Such advances could improve energy conservation through demand response, facilitate storage of electricity, ease grid access for intermittent renewable resources, and enhance electric system reliability.

Commissioner Kelly has served as a member of the FERC since November 2003. Previously she was a Professor of Law at the University of New Mexico School of Law, where she taught energy law, public utility regulation, administrative law, and legislative process. Prior to joining the faculty of the Law School, Ms. Kelly served as Chair of the New Mexico Public Service Commission, which regulated New Mexico's electric, gas and water utilities. Her other experience in the electricity industry includes serving as counsel to the California Independent System Operator in 2000. She is a graduate of the University of Rochester and Cornell Law School.

Chairman Brown has nearly 30 years of energy sector experience. He sits on the board of the National Association of Regulatory Commissioners (NARUC) and on NARUC's Committee on Electricity. Mr. Brown serves on the NARUC-Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Smart Grid Collaborative. He has served as NYISO Vice President of External Affairs, Manager of Governmental and Market Relations for Sithe Energies Inc., and Senior Policy Analyst for the NYS Energy Office. He received his B.A. from State University College at Plattsburgh and his Masters of Public Administration from the Rockefeller School of Public Affairs at the State University of New York at Albany.

The NYISO's True Grid Symposium and Technology Expo is a two-day event, scheduled for May 8-9 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, NY.

The Symposium's May 8 session will provide perspectives from key state and federal government leaders and offer information on consumer interests, funding opportunities for new technologies, and implementation experiences. The second day of the Symposium will focus on technology and the future evolution of the grid. On both days, the Technology Expo will showcase a wide array of advanced metering, demand-response, and resource management technologies and services.
